about

This is a traditional indigenous weeding song from Taiwan, with vocals performed by the Chu Yin Cultural and Arts Ensemble, a group of village elders from the Amis tribe. Millet plays an essential economic role in many traditional indigenous communities, and Amis villagers often sing this song while cultivating their crop. The melody that the singers perform in call and response fashion is vocalise, with no clear text or lyrics, but its meaning is clear to all participants:

"There are a number of weeds in millet field

We all work hard to get weeds

Come and weed, come and weed

We all look forward to a good harvest at the end of the year"
